Mariánské Lázně

Mariánské Lázně is famous for its beautiful English-style parks, romantic colonnades, charming pavilions, pleasant cafés, and cosy hotels, making it one of the most beautiful towns in Europe.

The wealth of Mariánské Lázně mainly lies in its healing mineral springs and unique atmosphere. It is a place where you can spend your relaxing holiday, but also enjoy active sports, walks, or cultural programs.

History
The history of the town of Mariánské Lázně is closely connected with the Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1197 by the nobleman Hroznata. Monks were also the first to identify a salt spring in their forest.

Under the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, the mineral waters were analysed, and during this period, the name Marienbad was first published. This name of the spa roughly means 'Marie's spring'. Physician Jan Josef Nehr – a monastic physician who, in 1779, found that small amounts of this water served several times a day adjusted one’s digestion, encouraged the appetite for food, and brought refreshing sleep.

In 1818, Marienbad was designated a separate municipality and acquired its spa site status. The spa was further developed thanks to Abbot Karel Kašpar Reitenberger from Teplá, who started the construction of spa houses and pavilions in the early 19th century.
